The terms Counselling and Psychotherapy are often used interchangeably. Though they have similar meanings with considerable overlap, there are some important distinctions between the two that are helpful to keep in mind when looking for a therapist.
Counselling, sometimes called “talk therapy,” is a conversation or series of conversations between a counsellor and client. Counselling usually focuses on a specific problem and taking the steps to address or solve it. Problems are discussed in the present-tense, without too much attention on the role of past experiences.
Psychotherapy, like counselling, is based on a healing relationship between a therapist and client. Psychotherapy also takes place over a series of meetings, though often it has a longer duration than counselling. Some people participate in therapy off and on over several years.
Instead of narrowing in on individual problems, psychotherapy considers overall patterns, chronic issues, and recurrent feelings. This requires an openness to exploring the past and its impact on the present. The aim of psychotherapy is to resolve the underlying issues which fuel ongoing problems and patterns. Psychotherapists help to resolve past experiences as part of laying the foundation for a life that you truly want.

I have had extensive training in psychology, psychotherapy, shamanic counselling and other healing arts. I hold a BA Hons. Degree in Clinical Psychology, MA Degree in Psychotherapy and Certificates in Shamanic Counselling. It is also important to mention that I am an accredited member of the Irish Association of Humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapy and adhere to their code of ethics.
Everyone is unique, and certainly not any "one" therapy works for everybody. When you choose to work with me, we firstly work together to create a therapeutic relationship built on trust and confidentiality. When we have established what it is that you want support with we create your sessions based on your individual needs and what you need to work on, by combining different techniques and approaches to fit your need.
We might initially contract to work together for a short period of time and then review our time together, before you decide to continue.
As you can see in the list above, Psychotherapy can be used for many different reasons... However I have many clients who purely take up psychotherapy as a method of Self Care and Personal Growth. They use the therapeutic space to "work on themselves" and to "check in with themselves".

"If counselling is ever going to work you need to be vulnerable, which can only be done when a therapist creates a safe, non-judgemental space where you feel you can be yourself.
