Psychotherapy

What is Psychotherapy?

The terms Counselling and Psychotherapy are often used interchangeably. Though they have similar meanings with considerable overlap, there are some important distinctions between the two that are helpful to keep in mind when looking for a therapist.

Counselling, sometimes called “talk therapy,” is a conversation or series of conversations between a counsellor and client. Counselling usually focuses on a specific problem and taking the steps to address or solve it. Problems are discussed in the present-tense, without too much attention on the role of past experiences.

Psychotherapy, like counselling, is based on a healing relationship between a therapist and client. Psychotherapy also takes place over a series of meetings, though often it has a longer duration than counselling. Some people participate in therapy off and on over several years.

Instead of narrowing in on individual problems, psychotherapy considers overall patterns, chronic issues, and recurrent feelings. This requires an openness to exploring the past and its impact on the present. The aim of psychotherapy is to resolve the underlying issues which fuel ongoing problems and patterns. Psychotherapists help to resolve past experiences as part of laying the foundation for a life that you truly want.

Why take up Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy can offer you help in addressing many situations that cause emotional distress, including, but not limited to:

  • Relationship difficulties (e.g. within families, with partners)
  • Anxiety, Depression, Stress and other mental and emotional problems and disorders
  • Bereavement - the death of a loved one
  • Social and emotional difficulties related to disability and illness
  • Sexual abuse and domestic violence
  • Career and job stress

Having Psychotherapy with me...

I have had extensive training in psychology, psychotherapy, shamanic counselling and other healing arts. I hold a BA Hons. Degree in Clinical Psychology, MA Degree in Psychotherapy and Certificates in Shamanic Counselling. It is also important to mention that I am an accredited member of the Irish Association of Humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapy and adhere to their code of ethics

Everyone is unique, and certainly not any "one" therapy works for everybody. When you choose to work with me, we firstly work together to create a therapeutic relationship built on trust and confidentiality. When we have established what it is that you want support with we create your sessions based on your individual needs and what you need to work on, by combining different techniques and approaches to fit your need.

We might initially contract to work together for a short period of time and then review our time together, before you decide to continue.

As you can see in the list above, Psychotherapy can be used for many different reasons... However I have many clients who purely take up psychotherapy as a method of Self Care and Personal Growth. They use the therapeutic space to "work on themselves" and to "check in with themselves".

"I am forever grateful to Jo-Anne for her support and guidance over the last few years. Her gentle and joyous spirit infuse her practice with warmth and compassion, bringing a sense of safety and encouragement, even on the darkest days. She has helped me to hear and attend to my own voice amid the clamour of life's din. She even convinced me to try Shamanic Dreaming! Though skeptical at first, I continue to hear echoes of the helpful, practical lessons gleaned from those experiences in a myriad, unrelated areas of life. It is no exaggeration to say that my time in Jo-Anne's company was, and continues to be even now, life-changing. "

"I have been lucky enough to enjoy some shamanic counselling sessions with Jo-Anne and it was an amazing experience. I have struggled with mental health issues for almost 30 years and I found with shamanic counselling and Jo-Anne’s vast experience in psychotherapy I made great progress. Definitely the best decision I ever made and I highly recommend Jo-Anne for her warm and authentic approach. "

"Jo-Anne is warm welcoming, and kind hearted. She has a loving energy which comes accross in her courses and counselling. She is always ready to listen and share generously her knowledge and wisdom. It is always a joy to attend her courses. What is partiularly special about Jo-Anne is the depth of her own personal journey as I believe a therapist can only bring a client as far as they have gone themselves. I wish her the very best ."

"If counselling is ever going to work you need to be vulnerable, which can only be done when a therapist creates a safe, non-judgemental space where you feel you can be yourself. I had met other therapists before Jo-Anne where I did not feel truly comfortable, which put me off counselling for another few years. I believe that many people open to counselling can be deterred by such experiences and I am always emphasising the importance of finding the right counsellor. I was one of Jo-Anne's first clients and even in her earliest days she had mastered this open, safe atmosphere. Jo-Anne showed me real kindness, before I thought I deserved it, and from her I learned to be kind to myself, and also to others. One thing that helped immensely was that Jo-Anne was open about her own journey. To know that someone I admired so much had once been in my shoes was the most empowering feeling, it meant that I could get there too, instead of it being something I wasn't capable of. Jo-Anne once said she was 'just doing her job' but it was so much more than that, she had helped me to live and enjoy life, not just survive it, and I will always remember it was her that helped me grow, not just someone doing their job. There may be external things I need to do in my life, things that might be seen as the markers of success, but internally everything has always been good since my time with Jo-Anne, I am kind to and support myself and so the journey, not the destination, is always with a good headspace."

"I went to Jo-Anne for thirty sessions of psychotherapy as part of my training in music therapy. I am so glad that I chose to see her. She is such a warm, genuine person and I found her very easy to talk to. I always felt very welcome and safe. She always asked the right questions, even when they were the difficult ones, to help guide me in figuring things out for myself. During my time with Jo-Anne I also got to try shamanic counselling and sound therapy. I felt very fortunate to get to work with a therapist with such unique training especially when undertaking my own training to become a therapist. I learnt a lot and I would highly recommend Jo-Anne."
